Our History

The Foundation was created in the late 1930’s by the wealth, generosity and leadership of Monroe Dunaway Anderson, along with the ingenuity, determination and collaboration of Messrs. Freeman and Bates, leaders of the law firm Fulbright & Jaworski.
Remarkably, it led to the establishment of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, the creation of the Texas Medical Center, and the recruitment of Baylor College of Medicine, Methodist Hospital, and other important medical institutions to the medical center.
Mission StatmentOur Purpose
Guided by our articles of incorporation and shaped over time by the enormous growth and changes in Houston, we strive to make a difference in worthy causes that typically fall into four categories:
I.
Medical and Health
with a particular focus on the Texas Medical Center
II.
Education
including higher education and early learning through high school
III.
Culture and the Arts
including greenspaces
IV.
Improving Lives
of the underserved
Our Guidelines
The Foundation rarely makes grants to organizations that do not have their primary focus on Houston and Harris County. The Foundation almost never makes grants to organizations that use the funds to make further grants (eg., endowments). Only those applications submitted by organizations which are tax exempt for Federal tax purposes will be reviewed.
Our Process
The four directors generally review proposals at the meeting after the applicable deadline. We most frequently make and communicate decisions following this meeting but sometimes postpone the decision closer to the end of the year when we more accurately know our funding capacity. Unless we initiate, we do not accept oral presentations or meetings.
